NBSS Training Consultant

Manchester, United Kingdom

I feel I am making a difference within the healthcare system while working for Hitachi Digital Systems and the NBSS. Our job ensures that a visit to the local breast screening service is as seamless as possible.

My journey from Greater Manchester Police to the NHS

I have a Criminology and Sociology BA from Manchester Metropolitan University. After graduating, I worked in various roles, such as volunteering as a Special Constable for Greater Manchester Police and as a Victim Support volunteer for the Salford Magistrates Courts. During this period, I successfully found a part-time role within the National Health Service (NHS). This is where my love of healthcare became apparent. I built up many relationships with consultants, nurses, and the public within my role.

My extensive NHS experience and its impact

I started working for the NHS in 2007 as a GP Direct Booking Clerk. From this role, I learned the fundamentals of the NHS and how it works. I had the amazing opportunity of working with GPs, the emergency services, and different departments within the hospitals. I feel this experience set me apart from many others as it gave me an insight into how the process works from the ground up.

I was then successful in gaining full-time employment in the appointments department. This was another great opportunity to learn about all the different specialties within the hospital system. This expanded my network and relationships, eventually leading me to apply for a job within the Breast Cancer Services department. I worked for Cancer Services for five years—this was the main highlight for me. I had a wonderful relationship with the consultants and breast care nurses. It made my job so much easier, and I felt it helped the pathway run smoothly, ensuring targets were met and patients were treated on time.

Transitioning into a consultant at HDS

Technology had never been my strong point. But the knowledge and experience of working within the NHS meant that I had years of experience with local NHS systems, especially the National Breast Screening System (NBSS). This experience helped me gain extensive knowledge of processes and ways of working. The knowledge of NBSS then led to my role as Training Consultant.

I feel I am making a difference within the healthcare system while working for Hitachi Digital Systems and the NBSS. If the work we do helps ensure that women receive the best possible service, then that’s the greatest reward. Our job ensures that a visit to the local breast screening service is as seamless as possible.

One piece of advice for women considering a career in technology

My advice for women entering the technology field is to be proactive in seeking out opportunities to gain experience. Whether it’s through volunteering, internships, or shadowing professionals, putting yourself out there and making yourself known is crucial. Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and take on challenges that push your skills and knowledge further. With hard work, determination, and the right mindset, you can achieve anything you set your sights on. I’ve learned that building relationships and networking are key to long-term success—not just within your immediate team but across departments and industries. These connections open doors and provide support throughout your journey.
